The economist who became a designer: the best decision I've made

Filip Blank studied economics in high school, but when he came into contact with building construction as a carpenter's apprentice, he had second thoughts.

"As a carpenter, I had a lot of questions about the construction that I never really got answers to. When I met a designer at work, he had the answers I was looking for, which was an eye-opener for me," he says.

Filip Blank's path to becoming a designer was not a straight one. After high school, he felt uncertain about his future and took a job as a carpenter's apprentice. There, between the day's work and evening studies, many questions arose about the construction process that he did not get answers to. When he came into contact with a designer who got many of the questions answered and his interest in the profession was awakened. The drawings, which he had been fascinated by since childhood, attracted him even more. During his time as a carpenter, his conviction to further his education as a construction engineer grew.

"Today, I am very happy with my decision to study at the university. Becoming a structural engineer has been the best decision I've made so far," says Filip enthusiastically. He sees his career as a constant journey towards new opportunities and development.

Having studied economics has also proven to be beneficial for Filip. He did not meet the entry requirements for the Bachelor of Science in Engineering programme, which led him to study a technical foundation year.

"It gave me a strong foundation for engineering studies and opened doors to new opportunities," he says.

Filip believes that many business students may be interested in exploring the engineering profession.

"When choosing an upper secondary school programme, many people are uncertain about the future. It's important to be open to change and to dare to follow your passion," says Filip Blank

His advice to prospective college students, especially in demanding engineering fields, is to stay committed and have a clear goal.

"If you're unsure about your studies, it's good to have the opportunity to try out the profession through initiatives such as Tekniksprånget. Getting a real-world insight into what an engineer does can be crucial for your future career.
